Remember Rose Quartz? That was so 2016. Really. In 2016, PANTONE's Color of the Year was Rose Quartz 13-1520. Three years later, we've come full circle with another pink hue, but now in a much more lively option: Living Coral.
Learn more about how the PANTONE Color of the Year is selected, this year's color: Living Coral, and how to incorporate it into your designed interior space (which we hope includes tile from Architectural Ceramics, of course).
Each year, the PANTONE Color Institute reveals its Color of the Year. Actors have the Oscars, and athletes have the ESPYS. Designers have the PANTONE Color of the Year (COTY). For 20 years, the PANTONE COTY has influenced the design community, be it fashion, industrial design, or home furnishings. The Institute selects the color based on a mix of research and trend analysis, such as: the entertainment industry, new artists, popular world travel destinations, or socio-economic conditions.
"With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial PANTONE's Living Coral hit a responsive chord."

executive director of the pantone color institute
In 2019, it's easy to see that technology and social media are a part of daily life. Gmail, Facebook, Twitter -- Among all the social platforms we use day-to-day, hour-to-hour, and minute-to-minute, society wants connection. The Institute found that in reaction to these quick connections, people also want an authentic and more intimate connection as well. This brought the PANTONE Color Institute to this year's selection: Living Coral.
Sociable and energizing, yet warm and comforting -- Living Coral is a color that embodies connection and well-being.
Executive Director of the PANTONE Color Institute says of the color, "With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial PANTONE's Living Coral hit a responsive chord."
After making their COTY selection, the PANTONE Color Institute explores different palettes, offering complimentary color combinations for those who adapt Living Coral into their designs. This year's pink hue with a golden undertone can certainly act as a bold focal point, or monochromatic mate to any interior space.
Here, the Focal Point palette mixes neutral tones with energizing ones, all while putting Living Coral front and center:
Pictured above, AC's gray porcelain tile from our Charme Collection, provides a neutral backdrop for the pink flamingo artwork to standout. This matte porcelain tile, made to look like honed marble, has an elegant look without the maintenance that natural stone requires.
To view more neutral but on-trend color options from our Charme Collection, visit our website's Product Page, or download a Data Sheet here.
If you're really a fan of Living Coral and want to go bold in both color and tile choice, try this coral fan-shaped tile.
This bathroom renovation, shown right, illustrates the Focal Point palette well because of its use of warm ceramic tile on the accent wall, and cool marble tile on the sides of the tub and the floors.
To get this look, visit one of AC's five showroom locations in the DC-metro area. A sales and design associate would be tickled pink to pull together ceramic and marble samples for you.
The PANTONE Color Institute's next palette, Sympatico, takes on a monochromatic feel. For this warm group of colors, the Institute was inspired by women around the globe, their skin tones, and the rouge used to give themselves a warm glow:
Our Belle Collection fits right in with this palette, bringing together modernity and softness with one tile. The cement tile base is hand-painted in a delicate shade of pink. To view this, or other AC collections featuring cement tile, visit our website and use the 'Cement' filter under the 'Products' tab.
Whether bold and energetic, or warm and feminine, both palettes from the PANTONE Color Institute compliment the COTY, Living Coral, well. Which combination do you prefer?
